Pelosi talks with Ukraine’s president in Kyiv, vowing to support the country ‘Until the Fight Is Done’
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, stated on Sunday that she met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv to convey the message that the US stands strongly with Ukraine as it fights “Putin’s diabolic invasion.” Zelensky welcomed Pelosi outside his presidential office, backed by an armed escort, dressed in the khaki military attire he has worn for public engagements since Russia’s invasion began on February 24.
On Sunday, Zelensky shared a video of their meeting, in which she led a small congressional delegation, on his Twitter feed, which has been viewed over 320,000 times. It was unknown when Pelosi arrived in Kyiv at the time of writing. Pelosi thanked Zelensky for fighting for freedom in the video, saying that Ukraine’s struggle was a fight for everyone.
While speaking to Zelensky, Pelosi said: “We believe that we are visiting you to say thank you for your fight for freedom. That you are on a frontier of freedom. Your fight is a fight for everyone and so our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done.”
Pelosi stated on Friday that she intended to enact a $33 billion aid package for Ukraine as quickly as possible, as requested by President Joe Biden. More than two months after Russia initiated what it calls a “special military operation,” the US has dramatically increased its assistance for Ukraine. Biden’s financing request includes more than $20 billion in guns, ammunition, and other military help, as well as $8.5 billion in direct economic assistance to Ukraine and $3 billion in humanitarian aid.
According to a statement from Pelosi’s group, which included Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Meeks, the delegation traveled from Ukraine to Poland for meetings with President Andrzej Duda and other senior officials. After Vice President Kamala Harris, Pelosi is the second in line to succeed Biden as House speaker. Moscow claims that its efforts are aimed at disarming Ukraine and ridding the country of anti-Russian chauvinism instilled by the West. Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of launching an unjustified aggressive campaign.
