Pujara and Rahane will be dropped from the team for the Sri Lanka series: Gavaskar believes
In February, India will host Sri Lanka for two Test matches following the conclusion of the South Africa series. The squad and team composition will be interesting to see considering what has happened in the ongoing series.
In the opinion of former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, there will certainly be two spots up for grabs in the Indian XI. “There will be two vacancies in the XI, not just Ajinkya Rahane. Shreyas Iyer got an opportunity in the Test series against New Zealand and he scored an impressive century. He scored decent runs throughout the series, so there will be two vacant places in the XI.,” Gavaskar stated during the third test between India and South Africa.
In addition, Gavaskar believes both Pujara and Rahane will be dropped from the team for the Sri Lanka series. Both Vihari and Iyer are expected to play. It remains to be seen who plays at no. 3. Hanuma Vihari may replace Pujara and Shreyas Iyer may be a suitable replacement for Rahane, but it remains to be seen. Nevertheless, he thinks there will certainly be two spots up for grabs against Sri Lanka.
Including a half-century in the second innings of the 2nd Test, Pujara scored 124 runs from three Tests, while Rahane had 126 runs, including one fifty. For two of India’s most experienced batsmen, this could be the end of the road after hanging swords over their heads for too long. Kohli said that Pujara and Rahane’s ‘experience is priceless’ but he must recognize that their numbers will not yield successful results.
