37 million customers data hacked – says US company T-Mobile
Seems like the US company T-Mobile should take some serious protective measures to protect their customers data. As this is the eighth time the company has been hacked since 2018 . This time again they have been hit in data theft involving 37 million customers.
The company said in a US Securities and Exchange Commission , that they realized on January 5 that a “bad actor” has been stealing data which includes T-Mobiles customers’ names , addresses , email , phone number , dates of birth and account numbers since November 25. Though the hacked data does not include bank or social card numbers , tax information or passwords according to the company. The company said that the hacker was stealing the data through a single application programming interface without any authorization.
‘Customers accounts and finances were not put at risk directly by this event.’ the Deutsche Telekom-owned company said.
The company assured that the affected customers will be notified and an internal investigation is still underway and that they may incur significant expenses in connection with the incident. According to the company source of hack was identified and fixed within 24 hours and rests of it’s systems were not affected by this incident.
In 2021 a similar incident happened with the telecommunication company which impacted nearly 76.6 million users’ data where they agreed to pay $500 million to settle a class-action lawsuit. The company also agreed to $350 million to settle lawsuits and $150 million on data protection and cyber security in 2022 and 2023.
