The news portal Guardian has been hit by an IT Incident which is believed to be a ransomware attack. The problems started late on Tuesday night of 20th December as it started hitting the company’s IT department. The attack has hit parts of media company’s technology infrastructure. The staffs were told to work from home with the attack.
As the attack intensified, it brought a lot of problems for the news company. Online publishing on the website has been the least affected in the incident but the attack managed to reached even the behind-the-scenes services in the company.
Whike the online stories and web articles are still being written and published on the Guardian website, the company faced problems in publishing print media. However, they made sure they’ll produce Thursday’s print newspaper.
A lot of companies has been hit by similar type of cyber attacks although this could be even worse than that. The company is speculating this incident to be a ransomware account where hackers may be involved. They might access the company’s protal and computer system and make demands.
“As everyone knows, there has been a serious incident which has affected our IT network and systems in the last 24 hours. We believe this to be a ransomware attack but are continuing to consider all possibilities,” said Katharine Viner, the editor-in-chief along with The Guardian Media Group chief executive, Anna Bateson.
“We are continuing to publish globally to our website and apps and although some of our internal systems are affected, we are confident we will be able to publish in print tomorrow. Our technology teams have been working to deal with all aspects of this incident, with the vast majority of our staff able to work from home as we did during the pandemic.” added the chief.
“We will continue to keep our staff and anyone else affected informed. We will update everyone again at the end of the day. With a few key exceptions we would like everyone to work from home for the remainder of the week unless we notify you otherwise,” directed the editors.
The company didn’t fail to thank their staff for getting through this bravely and supporting them.
