Cyberattack on IHG Hotels & Resorts, interrupts IT services
The largest hotel chain, InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (commonly known as IHG Hotels & Resorts), claims that its network was infiltrated yesterday, causing disruptions to its information technology (IT) services. IHG is a worldwide corporation based in Britain that now manages 6,028 hotels across more than 100 nations and has more than 1,800 more under construction.
Luxury, premium, and necessary hotel chains including InterContinental, Regent, Six Senses, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, and many more are among its brands. In a filing with the London Stock Exchange on Tuesday, InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (IHG or the Company) disclosed that some of its technological systems had been the target of unauthorized activity.
“IHG’s booking channels and other applications continue to experience substantial disruptions as of yesterday.” The international hotel chain has enlisted the help of outside specialists to look into the situation, and it has also notified the necessary regulatory bodies.
This raises the possibility of a ransomware assault in which the threat actors have set up encrypted computers and ransomware payloads on IHG’s network. The attackers in the majority of ransomware attacks would also steal sensitive data from the networks of their targets before encryption. The victims are afterwards coerced into paying a ransom under the fear of the stolen data being leaked in double extortion operations.
IHG continued, “IHG is attempting to quickly and completely restore all systems while also determining the nature, scope, and effects of the incident.” “As part of our response to the ongoing service disruption, we will provide assistance to hotel owners and operators. Direct reservations can still be made and operations at IHG hotels are still possible.”
