DDoSecrets releases data of internal U.S. law enforcement
BlueLeaks, also known as the #BlueLeaks hashtag, is a collection of 269 gigabytes of internal U.S. law enforcement data obtained by the hacktivism collective Anonymous and released on June 19, 2020 by DDoSecrets.
More than 200 law enforcement agencies produced the data—internal intelligence, bulletins, emails, and reports—between August 1996 and June 2020, frequently using fusion centres.
This provider’s clients include the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, as well as numerous local law enforcement agencies and what are known as Fusion Centers.
These are typically state-funded operations that were established in the aftermath of 9/11 to facilitate information sharing among various public safety agencies about threats to public safety.
According to media reports and a company statement, the data was obtained via a security breach at Netsential, a web developer that works with law enforcement.
Stephen Gartrell, the director of Netsential, was recognised by the Houston FBI in 2011 “for his work designing and hosting websites that educate the public about crime and terrorism.”
