Deepfake AI Hologram of a Binance Executive was Created by Scammers

An intriguing story about scammers employing AI-generated pictures to pose as a fake law company and scam unwary individuals and businesses surfaced earlier in April this year. This time, scammers have upped their game by fabricating a Deepfake hologram of a member of the Binance executive team.

Patrick Hillmann, the chief communication officer for Binance, disclosed that a “sophisticated” group of hackers are utilizing video footage of his prior interviews and media appearances and digitally altering it to create his AI hologram.

The scammers target Binance customers and their cryptocurrency projects by tricking them into online meetings using this Deepfake hologram.

He also revealed about getting lots of online messages from people who wanted to congratulate him for meeting with project teams and exploring the possibility of selling their assets on Binance.com. Hillmann stated that he had no knowledge or control over Binance listings, and he has never met with project teams.

In a thorough blog post, Hillmann claimed that despite having previously led one of the largest cybersecurity teams in the world and overseen some of the biggest data breaches in recent memory, including Ashley Madison, he was unprepared for the massive onslaught of phishing attacks, cybercrimes, and con games that routinely target the crypto fraternity.

A representative from Binance PR also pointed out that there has been an extraordinary rise in hackers impersonating executives and workers of well-known social media sites including Twitter, Telegram, and LinkedIn.

Additionally, Hillmann shared a screenshot of the project manager and him in a Zoom meeting. Hillmann swore it wasn’t him and refuted any such encounter.
