Hackers demands $4.5 million and API changes from Reddit or threatens to leak 80 GB data

When Reddit revealed in February that its systems were hacked, none of the exposed data could make its way to the public. But this time Ransomware gang BalckCat, also known as ALPHV has just taken responsibility for the hack. They claim to have 80 GB of compressed data. This information has come out through a “Reddit Files” name post on the gang’s data leak site.

Hackers claimed that they tried to contact Reddit twice, on April 13 and June 16, and demanded $4.5 million for the data to be deleted but no response was made. Hackers not only want this much massive money but also a reversal of API increases.

“I told them in my first email that I would wait for their IPO to come along. But this seems like the perfect opportunity! We are very confident that Reddit will not pay any money for their data,” threatened the ransomware operation.

“But I am very happy to know that the public will be able to read about all the statistics they track about their users and all the interesting confidential data we took. Did you know they also silently censor users? Along with artifacts from their GitHub!”

While Reddit did not make any comment over it BleepingComputer confirmed it to be the same attack that happened in February. The phishing attack allowed hackers to gain access to sensitive
internal documents, source code, employee data, and limited data about the company’s advertisers.

“After successfully obtaining a single employee’s credentials, the attacker gained access to some internal docs, code, as well as some internal dashboards and business systems,” explained a post by Reddit CTO Christopher Slowe, aka KeyserSosa.
