Members of Rotary India receive a mail having data about other members, and a hacking complaint is filed
The website of the Rotary India club was hacked by some cybercriminals, who then tried to send texts to its members claiming to have access to their personal information and were willing to sell it for Rs 20K.
An FIR was filed on August 12, 2022, with the Kasarwadavli police in Thane as an outcome of the private software company, which is responsible for protecting data, approaching the police with a letter of complaint this month.
According to the complainant, his business has been offering data protection services to Rotary India since 2014 and several influential persons in the nation are members of the club.
As per the complaint made on July 28, one of the club’s members called the complainant from Gujarat and claimed to have received a message from a hacker.
The email read, “Data of 1,00,000 Members of Rotary India for sale at Rs.19,999/-only.” It contained numerous grammatical errors. Details consist of members’ Names, Phone Numbers, Email Addresses, Business Classifications, Wedding Date, Date of birth, etc.
Later, a few different mobile numbers sent a similar WhatsApp message to several additional group members. The complainant claimed that he made attempts to contact the hacker via email and the two contact numbers but received no response.
On August 8, a large number of other members got in touch with the complaint and reported they also got the same messages. The complainant decided to contact the police after receiving numerous complaints that suggested his software may have been compromised to disclose the data.
Police in Kasarwadavli denied commenting on the situation. A senior member of an organization will call you back, the person who answered the phone number Rotary India given on their website said, but no responses were received as of the time the story was filed.
