The Anonymous Collective revealed 30,000 emails and 40,000 files from the embassy of Ecuador and Moscow

The Anonymous Collective released 30,000 emails and 40,000 files from 2018 to March 2022 containing Personal Identifiable Information (PII) of the Embassy of Ecuador and Moscow. The collective has shared a document on the Twitter handle regarding the incident. They have also mentioned that the data is available only to journalists and researchers due to its PII amount.

According to a source, the group has shared almost 53 gigabytes of data with the Journalists on DDoSecrets. The Personal Identifiable Information contained valuable passports, documents, and other sensitive information. DDoSecret or Distributed Denial of Secrets which is a non-profit whistleblower site for news leaks has denied making the PII files public.

Reports state that the files also contained removal orders for Ecuadorian citizens residing in Russia. DDoSecrets co-founder Emma Best said, “Anonymous’ first venture into the world of diplomacy gives us a glimpse inside the day-to-day operations of an embassy and an inside look at the interactions between the two countries, as viewed through the unique lens of the embassy staff.”

DDoSecret has also confirmed the presence of documents relating to Edward Snowden, the famous whistleblower who leaked top-secret information about the NSA.

According to several reports, Snowden’s passport was canceled by the U.S. government while he was at the Moscow airport. Later he was granted asylum in Russia which then permitted him into a permanent residency.

Reportedly, in the 2013 Gala Galarza, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility applied to the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation in order to safely bring Snowden into Ecuador. Russia granted the application but questioned Ecuador’s legal standing.

However, further communication between these two foreign countries was not recorded while Snowden remained settled in the Russian territory. It can be depicted that at last Ecuador’s application to bring Snowden into their territory was rejected.

According to these sources it can be stated that the leaked sensitive documents from the Embassy of Ecuador and Russia might contain sensitive information regarding these negotiations as well. DDoSecret has published 10 million hacktivists’ documents amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
