More Than One Billion WhatsApp Users Across the World in Threat?
As per an X update shared by @DarkWebInformer, a threat actor has put up a database of over a billion active WhatsApp phone numbers for sale. From what it seems, these WhatsApp numbers belong to users from many countries where WhatsApp is operational.
No confirmation has been shared by Meta or cyber security experts yet regarding this, however, if this news turns out to be true, the users of these WhatsApp numbers may become targets of future malicious activities such as phishing attacks, spam campaigns, identity thefts, and more. Cyber criminals will also be able to use these WhatsApp numbers to collect and build more detailed profiles of users, which can be misused later.
WhatsApp users as of now are advised to stay cautious and vigilant with everything that they do, so as to prevent them from falling victims to these mentioned malicious activities. They must be very careful with messages and calls from unknown numbers, and must also avoid themselves from clicking on links or downloading files received from unknown sources. Also, it is best advised to turn on two factor verification, and keep regularly reviewing the privacy settings on WhatsApp as well as on other applications.
