Singapore open: Sadom Kaewkanjana fends off chasing pack to win
Thai golfer Sadom Kaewkanjana won the SMBC Singapore Open, beating South Korean Kim Joo-hyung and Japanese Yuto Katsuragawa by three shots on Sunday.
The 23-year-old won five times in Thailand last year, but the Singapore victory – where he signed off with a two-under-par 69 – is his biggest victory since turning professional.
With a share of the lead entering the day, Sadom parred the first five holes before hitting two birdies on holes six and seven for a score of 34.
He made nine consecutive pars without dropping a shot on the back nine to post a winning score of 13-under-par 271.
“I’m very excited and happy to have won this tournament. There was a lot of pressure on me today, but I stayed patient and succeeded,” he said.
“I am proud of myself after putting a lot of hard work into this victory.”
As a result of his victory, Sadom qualified for The Open Championship at St Andrews in July.
The first time he had played in a major was at the home of golf, St Andrews, and he was looking forward to competing.
Following his victory at the Singapore International last week, Kim missed the opportunity to win back-to-back tournaments.
Despite finishing tied for second, he became the second youngest winner of the Order of Merit on the Asian Tour.
As he said in a statement, “I did not realize it would be this quick (to win the merit title). It is still sinking in, but I am extremely grateful.”
Singapore Open ended the Asian Tour’s season in 2020-21, which had a lengthy hiatus last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
