Super-mosquito to pose a huge threat to Africa’s largest cities

The super mosquito can rapidly pose a great threat in developing countries of Africa. A new breed of mosquito known ass Anopheles Stephensi is reported to have been spread to the Horn of Africa from India. Scientists have reported it to rapidly thrive in urbanizing regions. However, it is not as powerful in terms of the carrying capacity of the malaria-causing virus as in the case of the gambie mosquito. It has been reported that this super-mosquito rapidly breeds in places like stagnant water or, rubbish dumps. It can thrive in almost every place from a jam jar to a small breakfast pot.

In 2020, malaria had led 60000 people to be diagnosed with the disease in Djibouti. However, 2021 has seen a downward trend in the number of cases. Malaria had killed African kids, especially below the age of five, during the spread of malaria in 2020. It is generally sia that malaria spreads in rural areas rather than the urban city centers. However, Anopheles Stephensi is said to affect especially the rapidly urbanizing megacities of Africa. Over 40 percent African population lives in urban areas of Africa. Hence, all of them are highly suspected to be affected by this disease. Stephensi must be given an urgent attention as it might pose a great threat to African cities.
