Google’s first fully custom chip Tensor G5 can be manufactured by TSMC

Google has reportedly begun working on its self-developed Tensor chip. As per the report by Economic Daily Google has handed over its self-developed version of Tensor to KYEC. The KYEC provides testing services for new chips headed to manufacturing in Taiwan. The report also mentioned that Google has been involved in purchasing required hardware for chip testing at KYEC. And the testing can begin in the middle of this year.

The company was reported to work with Samsung for its upcoming chip Tensor G4 which is supposed to be not so different from Tensor G3 which powers the Pixel 8 series. And Tensor G4 is said to use the same technology that Samsung has used in the Exynos 2400 processor.

Google’s first fully custom chip is likely the Tensor G5 codenamed “Laguna” which the company can release in 2025. It can be fabbed on TSMC’s 3nm process with AI capabilities at the center. The shift from Samsung to TSMC for Tensor G5 is undoubtedly going to be beneficial for Google. As of now, it is relying on Samsung Exynos chip base but TSMC’s 3nm process will result in much higher efficiency than before.
