Google Doodle Celebrates the 80th Birthday of Dr. Mario Molina
Google Doodle celebrated the 80th birthday of the Mexican chemist, Dr. Mario Molina on the 19th of March, 2023. Molina was the first to discover and convince the world regarding how chemicals could affect the ozone layer which is so vital to all living beings.
Here’s more about the genius scientist, Dr. Mario Molina.
The 80th Birthday of Dr. Mario Molina
Dr. Mario Molina was a Mexican Chemist born in the year 1943 in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico as a child, he was very fascinated with the world of science that he turned his very own bathroom into a laboratory. The happiness in seeing the microbial beings with the help of his toy microscope might have been what gave him the motivation to pursue a career in the field of science.
Molina acquired bachelors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in chemical engineering and later went on to pursue an advanced degree from the University of Freiburg located in Germany. After doing his advanced degree, Molina started his postdoctoral research at the University of California in Berkeley, United States, and then went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
It was in the early 1970s that Molina along with some of his co-researchers was able to find out how chlorofluorocarbons present in air conditioners, refrigerators, aerosol sprays, and other such things, were causing the depletion of the ozone layer. The findings of Molina and his team were later published in the journal called Nature and it explained the importance of the ozone layer that prevents the ultraviolet rays of the sun from touching the earth’s surface and how the synthetic chemical has been affecting the ozone layer.
The findings of Molina and his team not only gained them a Nobel Prize in Chemistry but also formed the foundation of the Montreal Protocol which is an international treaty considered one of the most important environmental treaty ever made. The treaty instructed governments to ban the production of about 100 chemicals that had caused the depletion of the ozone layer.
For his contributions to the world of science and for the timely intervention that he made in saving the environment, Google has honored the late chemist with a doodle on his 80th birthday which took place on the 19th of March, 2023. Dr. Mario Molina will always be remembered for his achievements and for his contributions.
Good news: the ozone layer is on track to fully recover ❤️🩹
