U-19 World Cup: Players recover from COVID-19 in time for India’s quarterfinal match against Bangladesh
The six covid-hit players in India’s Under-19 team, including captain Yash Dhull and deputy Sheikh Rasheed, have recovered from the virus and are available for selection for the team’s quarterfinal against Bangladesh at Antigua on January 29.
“All the players have recovered. The players will join the team today and will be eligible for selection for the last eight clash on Saturday,” a BCCI source said on Friday, according to TOI.
Having tested positive for covid on the day of India’s match against Ireland in a Group B match in Trinidad last Wednesday, the players were isolated in Trinidad, missing India’s matches against Ireland and Uganda.
In addition to Dhull and Rasheed, Aaradhya Yadav, Vasu Vats, Manav Parakh, and Siddharth Yadav were also infected with the virus, which made it difficult for India to field an XI against Ireland. India played with a bare minimum number of players against Uganda too, so they all missed that match as well.
Accordingly, the BCCI had last Friday flown in four backup players for the Covid-wrecked team attending the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies. As back-ups for the Dhull-led side, Abhishek Porel (Bengal), Uday Saharan (Rajasthan), Rishith Reddy (Hyderabad), and Ansh Gosai (Saurashtra) were sent.
