“Let us remember the sacrifices of our Kashmiri brothers and stand in solidarity as they continue their struggle for freedom,” the contentious tweet stated. The hashtag #KashmirSolidarityDay was also used in the message.
Indian netizens were outraged by the company’s choice to demonstrate support with Kashmiris, and sought a boycott of the company. On Twitter, the hashtag #BoycottHyundai quickly became a top trend.
Kashmir has long been a contentious topic between India and Pakistan, with both countries fighting wars over it. In August 2019, India abolished Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood status after the Indian government, led by BJP Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced the repeal of Article 370, which granted unique powers to the indigenous population, primarily Muslims.
