Google, Meta and Twitter face criticism by Government for fake news

Fake news or suppression of free speech?

Why Google, Meta and Twitter face criticism by Indian Government?

Google, Meta, and Twitter face criticism by Indian Government for fake news. It was in a meeting between officials of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) and the intermediary platforms. It was a virtual meeting. Domestic platforms from India such as Sharechat and Koo were also attending the meeting.

Facebook is now known as Meta.

As per the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the intermediary platforms are not taking down fake news. Indian government and the intermediaries are stuck in argument for a long time now. It dates back to government’s proposal to hold intermediaries responsible for the content that their users post.

Further, the intermediaries claim that they are taking adequate measures to reduce the spreading of misinformation. Also, that the government is constantly tightening the regulations.

However, the government replies that they intermediaries are not removing the content spreading misinformation proactively.

Digital right’s advocates express concern over free speech

I&B on behalf of the government alleges that the platforms are not doing enough to remove fake content. Due to this, the government is forced to order deletion of such content. Further, the content for removal consists of misinformation on sensitive content about Indian army, local elections, Indian’s international relations etc.

In response to it, firms are alleging that the Indian government maintains a close environment against criticism. Twitter highlights that Indian government orders content removal the most. Digital right’s advocates express concern over the matter. They suggest that it curbs free speech in a democratic framework
