Intel Might be Planning to Drop the “i” Branding from its CPUs: Here’s What We Know

Rumors and speculations have been spreading regarding the plans of Intel to drop the “i” branding that they have been using since the 1980s on its CPUs. While Intel hasn’t confirmed anything particular about their decision, few hints are pointing out that such a change might happen.

Here’s more about it.

Intel to Drop the “i” Branding from its CPUs?

Intel is one of the leading CPU manufacturers and for years has been in the industry. The company has been well received and most of the PCs and laptop devices that are now available in the market are powered by the CPUs from Intel. The only competition the company has is with AMD, another American CPU maker that has also been in the industry for quite some time.

Intel has been using the “i” branding ever since the i860 processor launched in the 1980s, and since 2008 had made the “i” branding popular with its i3, i5, and i7 processor lineups. Now recent speculations are revealing that the company might be planning to drop its iconic “i” branding from its CPUs.

The speculations had started ever since an Intel CPU with the moniker “Intel Core Ultra 5 1003H” appeared on a benchmark of the game, Ashes of the Singularity, which had pointed that the company might be planning to drop its “i” branding and be replacing it with an “Ultra” branding.

The company is currently preparing for the launch of the “Meteor Lake processors”, which are going to be the 14th generation of Intel processors and will feature a different CPU architecture and will offer better performance. The company’s Director of Global Communications, Bernard Fernandes had also recently posted on the Twitter platform about the launch of the Meteor Lake processors, in which he also pointed out some brand changes the company is planning to make. However, what the changes are have not been declared yet.

We’ll probably have to wait for more updates to confirm the speculations. The real reason why the company is considering a branding change is still unknown and many consider it as a foolish decision as the “i” branding has been an iconic factor for Intel CPUs. Some also speculate that Intel might be taking the step to distance itself from Apple which also uses the same “i” branding on their devices as well. However, as mentioned these are simply speculations and we’ll have to wait for an official declaration from the company’s side to confirm it.
