Kangana Ranaut’s alms statement, according to a BJP politician, is the “worst misuse of freedom.”

Praveen Shankar Kapoor, a Delhi BJP leader, took to Twitter to demand legal action against Kangana Ranaut for her statement that India's independence in 1947 was nothing more than alms and that the country only gained true independence in 2014.

On Friday, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) official lambasted Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut for her ‘bheek’ statement on India’s independence and requested that she be prosecuted.

Kangana’s words, according to Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor, are the “worst misuse of freedom” and a “insult to the sacrifice” of freedom fighters.

Kangana Ranaut’s words, according to Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor, are a “insult to the sacrifice” of independence warriors.

“As the son of a freedom warrior and a member of a family of freedom fighters, I regard Kangana Ranaut’s remark that India’s freedom was alms (bheeks) to be the most egregious misuse of liberty… On Thursday, he wrote in Hindi, “I wish the Indian justice system takes cognizance.”

The national award-winning actor, who earned the Padma Shri earlier this week, sparked the latest controversy while attending a major media network’s annual summit.

“Woh azaadi nahi thi, woh bheek thi,” Kangana said regarding India’s freedom struggle. Aur jo azaadi mili hai woh 2014 mai mili hai (Those were alms, not freedom.) In 2014, we were given true freedom.)”

In 2014, the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) took power at the Centre.

Kangana Ranaut has received a tremendous criticism from the Congress and other opposition parties, as well as from a number of BJP leaders, including MP Varun Gandhi. Gandhi inquired if the actor’s mind process should be termed “madness or treason” while tweeting a video of the occurrence.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police Department, requesting that Kangana be charged.

In the meantime, the All India Mahila Congress has written to President Ram Nath Kovind, requesting that her Padma Shri be revoked. The ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has made a similar demand, with the Shiv Sena demanding that Modi and BJP president JP Nadda voice their “Mann ki Baat” on Kangana’s views and revoke the state accolades she has received.
