‘LumiPhone 1020 SE’ Project of a Reddit User Brings Back the Lumia 1020 With iPhone SE 3’s Internals

The tech world last year in 2024 saw the debut of the HMD Skyline featuring a design similar to the much appraised and long gone Lumia phones, however it was more like a failed attempt from the brand’s side in the eyes of many. Well, what wasn’t possible for HMD seems to have been made possible by a Reddit user as part of his ‘LumiPhone 1020 SE’ project.

Yes, he has indeed brought back the Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone to life, however with the internals of Apple’s 2022-released iPhone SE 3 device, but retaining a very similar and an alike design when compared with the 2013-released Windows phone. Also, it’s no longer Windows, it is running on iOS!

Lumia 1020 Running With iPhone SE 3 Internals and iOS?

Just like what Hackintosh means to a Windows PC, a Reddit user has successfully brought the iOS operating system on a Windows phone as part of a project, but there is more to it. This guy was actually able to bring back to life the Lumia 1020 smartphone with the internals of the iPhone SE 3 and as mentioned, with the iOS operating system running on it.

On the hardware side, everything is from the iPhone SE 3 itself, and only the front glass shell and the outer body is of the Lumia 1020’s. Notably, the way the hardware has been incorporated is commendable, as everything is placed in such a way so that a person would feel like this is in fact a Lumia 1020 device from 2013 until he or she turns it on.

Speaking more, this ‘LumiPhone 1020 SE’ (~ what the Reddit user has decided to call it) makes use of the iPhone SE 3’s A15 Bionic chip, 128GB internal storage, display(Retina IPS LCD), 12MP rear camera, 7MP selfie camera, Taptic Engine, Touch ID sensor, SIM card tray, lightning port, and everything there is that can be used. Additionally, 5G connectivity can also be used thanks to the iPhone SE 3 internals.

So in comparison what is different? Obviously the software is different as pointed out, and instead of the 41MP rear camera, a 12MP camera is replaced in its place. The selfie camera on the other hand seems to have been upgraded (1.2MP > 7MP), as well as the charging interface with the lightning port instead of the micro USB port. 5G connectivity from 4G and the added Touch ID (working) at the back within the camera module are also improvements. But, replacing the actual Lumia 1020 shutter button, the volume down button has been made to serve the purpose due to certain software limitations. Also, since it is currently on iOS 18.3.1 as mentioned by the Reddit user, it is completely usable and is also claimed to receive future OTA updates too (that is intended for the Apple iPhone SE 3).
