On the Thursday of 16th February 2023, the parent company of Facebook, Meta has introduced Telegram-like broadcast channels on Instagram. The new broadcast chat feature will only be available on Instagram and users will also only be able to access it through their smartphones

With the new broadcast chat feature, creators will be able to share updates and news with their followers instantly and to a large number of people. This could mean that in the future, the new broadcast chat feature might become an alternative to the micro-blogging platform, Twitter.

The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg had announced and introduced the new feature through his new channel on Instagram, “Meta Channel 📢”. Zuckerberg has also shared that everything about what is happening at Meta will be first shared by him on his channel before it is shared on any other platforms.

The broadcast chat feature will support texts, images, polls, reactions and a lot more and audiences will be able to react to them using emoji’s and by taking part in polls. However it is also to be noted that followers won’t be able to post or send messages on the channels and the owner of the channel will only be the person who will be able to do so.

As mentioned, currently the feature will only be available on Instagram and later will be made available on other Meta platforms which includes Facebook and Messenger. The new chat feature has also been made available to some of the creators which includes the streamer Valkyrae and the snowboarder Chloe Kim. In the near future, the channels will also be able to support collaborations with guest appearances and many more additional features.
