Is the OnePlus Open 2 Really Cancelled?
The Chinese smartphone maker, OnePlus, officially debuted its first ever foldable device – the OnePlus Open smartphone (re-branded version of OPPO’s Find N3) back in October 2023 in a 16GB/512GB storage option and Emerald Dusk & Voyager Black color choices. The device back then was an instant hit, gaining the recognition as the ‘Best Foldable of 2023’. On top of this success, the brand had also introduced the OnePlus Open Apex Edition later in August 2024, featuring a higher 16GB/1TB storage and a Crimson Shadow color.
OPPO in 2025, has already announced the debut of its next iterative book-like or horizontal folding smartphone – Find N5, as well as the launch of the Watch X2 smartwatch on the same day, in the global market. In related news, OnePlus also announced the launch of its Watch 3 smartwatch globally, however, an official update concerning the much awaited Open 2 was missing, and the tech world has been anxiously waiting for it. As already known, the OPPO Watch X2 and OnePlus Watch 3 are re-branded devices, and reports had been stating that the upcoming OnePlus Open 2 will be a re-branded OPPO Find N5 device.
After the long wait, an official update concerning the OnePlus foldable has indeed arrived, but carrying unfortunate news. OnePlus has decided that it won’t be launching a foldable device this year in 2025, and the stage will belong to the OPPO Find N5 foldable instead. To note, this does not necessarily mean that the OnePlus Open 2 is cancelled, and it has been pointed out that the decision does not mark a departure from the segment. Maybe we could be hearing a positive update next year in 2026. Let’s hopefully wait until then.
Also, OnePlus Open users won’t have to worry about anything as the brand has promised and assured that it will still be continuing the roll-out of regular software and security patch updates, as well as the after-sales support.
[Just to add, OPPO’s Find N5 and Watch X2 are launching on the 20th of February 2025, whereas OnePlus’ Watch 3 will be launching on the 18th of February 2025, two days before.]
