Non Twitter Blue Subscribers After the 20th of March 2023 Won’t be Able to Use Text Message for 2FA

From the 21st of March 2023 onwards, Twitter users who aren’t subscribed to Twitter Blue won’t be able to use text message as their two factor authentication method.

Here’s what we know.

Twitter Two Factor Authentication

Non Twitter Blue subscribers will have to rely on authentication apps and security key for their two-factor authentication starting from the 21st of March 2023. They’ll have to change their two factor authentication method or will have to subscribe to Twitter Blue. Twitter users who haven’t enabled two factor authentication won’t be affected by the change.

It was recently noticed by the company of how the two factor authentication using text message, which is supposed to offer an added security to the accounts instead gave bad doers an easy method to get access to the accounts of others. For this reason, Twitter led by Elon Musk has restricted the two-factor authentication using text message only to Twitter Blue subscribers.

Previously Twitter offered two factor authentication using text message. authentication app and with security key. Both the authentication app and the security key are now being considered more secure but however “require you to have physical possession of the authentication method”.

In the recent tweet by Elon Musk, CEO and current owner of Twitter, he has mentioned that the two factor authentication using free authentication app is more reliable and much more safer compared to text message based two factor authentication, thereby encouraging Twitter users to use this method.

Twitter users will have to download an authentication app like Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile, Authy, 1Password and others and will have to link their account with the time based, one time password they receive and afterwards can access their accounts using the authentication app.
