Opinion- ‘Am I about to get scammed? I don’t know who this guy is – cashback offer or cash scam fear

Brands all across the world always look for new and unique ways of marketing in order to grab the attention of buyers towards them. When it comes to a unique way, one that has managed to make a big name in a short span of time through its unique ads and marketing method is Cred. Cred is a members-only credit card bill payment platform that rewards its members for clearing their credit card bills on time.

Cred not only rewards its members for paying Credit Card bills on time but also new users in order to lure them so that they make an account and start using it. Cred’s new cashback offer asks users to send Rs 1 to any random number, who don’t have Cred but has UPI linked to that number. As soon as you send that random number Rs 1, you will get cashback up to Rs 100.

What’s the issue?

A user named Shawmava Mukharjee shared a screenshot of his Paytm account on Twitter which shows that he has received Rs 1 from another user. The screenshot shows the UPI id of the sender and the amount that has been paid via the Cred app. A user sharing the post wrote, “Am I about to get scammed? I don’t know who this guy is”.

Amid rising cases of online fraud users have become vigilant. It means that receiving Rs 1 from an unknown user can make anyone jump off the couch with the thought of another kind of fraud. Won’t it be annoying for the user whose random number has been used which is actually a UPI-linked number?

Frauds are always in search of loopholes and can for sure use them to scam users online. This cashback marketing method can be more annoying for users than beneficial. Those who send Rs 1 to any random number using Cred must know that their UPI id would be visible to a random user, which raises the question if it’s safe.

So I think it would be better if Cred does not use such marketing methods to lure users and if it use, it should make sure that everyone knows about it.
