Twitter removes “state affiliated” and “government funded” labels from major news accounts
Twitter or its owner Elon Musk frequently becomes part of controversial news and this time also the same pattern carries on as there have been many changes taking place on Twitter overnight.
Remember how recently, major news organizations like US Public Broadcaster NPR and Canadian CBC stopped their activity on Twitter just because the social media platform gave them “government-funded” labels? Even the BBC was given the same label due to which these organizations complained of the description being inaccurate.
To these accusations, Elon Musk replied sarcastically that “Twitter was trying to be accurate .”
But on Friday, the social media platform removed the labels such as state-affiliated, government-funded, and public-funded from major news accounts.
The affected accounts were – BBC, Russia’s RT, NPR in the US, and China’s official Xinhua news agency.
These labels were used to highlight which accounts were linked to state media or government officials. Apart from this, some other changes are made on the social media platform one of which is the removal of the blue tick verification mark from the account of users who don’t pay a monthly subscription. Some of these Twitter users include – Beyonce, Cristiano Ronaldo, Virat Kohli, and Amitabh Bachchan.
