A new update from a tipster suggests that Xiaomi’s SoC which was said to be in the works more than two years ago might be arriving soon. Xiaomi likely planning to compete with other leading smartphone brands by developing their own chipsets.

A New Xiaomi SoC Coming?
Giant tech companies including Apple, Google, and Samsung have their own self-developed chipsets and we have seen them releasing smartphones equipped with these chipsets. For example, Apple has its Bionic chipsets, whereas Google has been releasing Pixel devices with Tensor chipsets. Even if Samsung uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets for most of their devices, variants or models with Exynos chipsets are also being launched in global markets.
This advantage that these brands have by having their own chipsets surely gives them an upper hand in the smartphone competition, which might be why, the Chinese smartphone and other consumer electronics manufacturer, Xiaomi, had introduced the Surge S1 chipset, its own in-house SoC, back in 2017.
To speak of the chipset, it had a core configuration with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.4 GHz along with four 1.4 GHz cores and was integrated with the Mali-T860 GPU. It was developed with the combined work of TSMC, Pinecone, and Xiaomi, using TSMC’s 28nm HPC+ fabrication process. Following the Surge S1 SoC, the brand also brought out the Surge C1 ISP(Image Signal Processor) and Surge P1 PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) equipped with the Mi MIX Fold (Cetus) and Xiaomi 12 Pro (Zeus) devices respectively, four years later, in 2021.
Around the same year in which Google was reported to have been in the works of its own chipset and the same year in which the first generation Tensor chipset came out in the Pixel 6 series devices, Xiaomi was also said to be in the works to release a new mobile chipset. As per the report published by Gizmochina(received via Times of India), Xiaomi was hiring employees to work on its chip production team.
Claiming the report to be true, Digital Chat Station, a Chinese tipster on Weibo, has now shared that the 4G/5G basebands for Xiaomi’s SoC is done, suggesting that the chipset may soon arrive in one of the brand’s devices.

Nothing much is actually known about this particular SoC from Xiaomi and we’ll have to wait until more updates are revealed to know anything about the it.
