Here’s the Photo of Margaret Hamilton Standing Next to the Code that Sent Mankind to the Moon

Margaret Hamilton, the American computer scientist and her team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) developed the flight software for NASA’s Apollo project.

A photo of her standing next to the code, she and her team developed has been surfacing throughout the internet for all these years.

Lets just take a look at the contribution of Hamilton and her team and how she was able to play a significant role in history.

Margaret Hamilton and the Apollo Code

In 1961, the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory was contracted with NASA to develop the software which was to send humans to the moon for the first time in history. Margaret Hamilton, a computer scientist led the Software Engineering Division and had played a significant role in creating the flight software for the Apollo program of NASA.

Hamilton and her team was assigned with the task of creating the lunar module(LM) and the command module(CM) onboard flight software. With the codes she and her team developed, NASA was able to send humanity to the moon for the first time in the history of mankind in 1969.

The staff photographer of the Instrumentation Laboratory in 1969 took the photo of Hamilton standing next to the codes which took humanity to the moon and can be seen at the MIT with the caption, “Here, Margaret is shown standing beside listings of the software developed by her and the team she was in charge of, the LM [lunar module] and CM [command module] on-board flight software team.”

The codes in its entirety has also been added to the code sharing site called GitHub and the 1,45,000 lines long code can now be viewed online.

Margaret Hamilton who is now an independent computer scientist, systems engineer and a business owner will always be remembered for the significant role she has played in changing the phase of mankind.
