ISRO bestowed with the prestigious Leif Erikson Lunar Prize by Húsavík Museum, Iceland for their contribution to lunar exploration

As a mark of recognition and appreciation towards ISRO’s unwavering efforts in lunar exploration and the success of Chandrayaan-3, the Húsavík Museum has awarded the prestigious Leif Erikson Lunar Prize to ISRO. The Embassy of India in Iceland shared updates about the same on the social media platform X.

The Indian Ambassador Balasubramanian Shyam received the prestigious prize on behalf of ISRO. Chairman of ISRO, Mr. S. Somanath also expressed his gratitude for the award through Balasubramanian Shyam.
ISRO successfully launched the Chandrayaan-3 on 14 July 2023 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre and the Vikram lander landed the Lunar South Pole on 23 August. With this India became the first nation to land near the lunar South Pole and the fourth nation to successfully land on the Moon.
The Exploration Museum in Húsavík, Iceland presents the Leif Erikson Awards for achievements in exploration and significant works in the field of exploration history. The awards are segregated into three categories.
The awards are awarded in the following categories:
- to an explorer for a lifetime achievement in exploration
- to a young explorer under 35 years of age for achievements in exploration
- to a person or an organization that has worked to promote and preserve exploration history.
