JWST has discovered the oldest galaxy ever seen in the universe
On Wednesday, The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has broken its record by discovering the oldest galaxy ever seen in nearly 100 million years. The Galaxy is known as “GLASS-z13”.
According to NewScientist, discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope are pouring in, with an analysis of the latest data revealing a galaxy that dates back to just 300 million years after the big bang – the oldest we have ever seen.
“Discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope, galaxy GN-z11 was the previous recorder holder, which dates back to 400 million years after the birth of the universe,” a source as per NewScientist.
GN-z11 is a high-redshift galaxy found in the constellation Ursa Major. The 2015 discovery was published in a 2016 paper headed by Pascal Oesch and Gabriel Brammer (Cosmic Dawn Center).
Up until the discovery of HD1 in 2022, GN-z11 was the oldest and most distant known galaxy yet identified in the observable universe having a spectroscopic redshift of z = 11.09, which corresponds to a proper distance of approximately 32 billion light-years (9.8 billion parsecs)
“The galaxy has such a high redshift that its angular diameter distance is actually less than that of some galaxies with lower redshift. This means that the ratio of its angular size to its size in light-years is greater,” a source as per Wikipedia.
