NASA Scientists are puzzled by a mysterious double crater appeared on the Moon

A crash site of a “mystery rocket body” has been spotted by NASA on the Moon’s surface earlier this year. NASA has spotted a double crater possibly immerged from the impact of more than an average-sized rocket.

Reports say that no space-exploring nations have claimed responsibility for the impact which induces mysteries regarding the incident. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, currently orbiting the Moon, has shown unusual images from the impact site on June 24. Following this observation by NASA’s robotic spacecraft, they said, “Surprisingly the crater is actually two craters, an eastern crater (18-meter diameter. about 19.5 yards) superimposed on a western crater (16-meter diameter, about 17.5 yards). The double crater was unexpected. No other rocket body impacts on the Moon created double craters.”

NASA further stated that two possible large masses on each end of the rocket might have created the craters but leaving behind impact marks are dubious. However, the astronomers have spotted an unidentified rocket colliding with the Moon on March 4 which created a complex overlapping impact crater at the Hertzsprung crater, an enormous crater located on the far side of the Moon. Yet, it didn’t form a crater that is similar to the double-size mystery crater.

According to data from Arizona State University at least 47 rocket bodies have impacted the Moon’s surface. Four large craters found on the Moon are results of the impact caused by Apollo 13, 14, 15, and 17 missions. These craters are larger and the mysterious double crater has a width created from that of Apollo missions of the 70s.
