Study says Earth’s Inner Core has stopped spinning – Is it bad?

Thousands of feet below ground level lies the earth’s core, made of molten lava at a temperature so high that it is not possible to capture it. The earth’s core, as we all have studied in schools, spins on its axis. What if it stops moving? Is it something we should be concerned about? Let us know.

As stated by a study, Earth’s inner core has recently stopped spinning and may be beginning to change the direction of its rotation. This is a completely normal phenomenon and you don’t need to worry about it.

The change of direction of rotation of Earth’s Inner core is a part of a cycle that repeats itself in 70 years. It may influence the length of Earth’s days and its magnetic field.

As reported by ScienceNews, geophysicist Xiaodong Song of Peking University in Beijing says, “We see strong evidence that the inner core has been rotating faster than the surface, [but] by around 2009 it nearly stopped”

“Now it is gradually mov[ing] in the opposite direction,” he added.

Irrespective of this being a natural phenomenon, scientists can’t help themselves being skeptical about it. With changing times and considering how much human activities harm the environment, it is not really surprising for us to hear that we’ve done it again, it is irreversible damage to the planet.
