Skype is shutting down its active operations next month on the 5th of May 2025. Here are four other alternatives to Skype phone number and calling that one can rely on, along with their sign-up process.

Microsoft Teams – Teams Phone

Microsoft Teams which is also a service offered by Microsoft just like Skype (Microsoft owns Skype), and a recommended alternative to Skype, is a leading communication platform. With the help of Teams Phone, it also offers its users calling capabilities too. For businesses that already rely on Microsoft services, Teams Phone can be a good alternative to Skype phone numbers.

Regarding its sign-up process, users will need a Microsoft 365 business subscription for this, and it should include Teams Phone license. After setting up the Microsoft 365 account, users will be able to configure Teams Phone within the Teams app.

Google Voice

With Google Voice, users can access a virtual phone number that can be used for calling, messaging, and even to send voicemails. Also, it is well integrated onto the Google ecosystem, and is available for personal and business use.

About its sign-up, obviously a Google account is needed. In the United States, it can be freely used for personal use. However, for business use, users will require a Google Workspace account. The sign-up process is to be done via the Google Voice website or Google Workspace Admin Console.

Zoom Phone

Zoom which is primarily known for its video conferencing services also offers an alternative to Skype phone numbers and calling – with Zoom Phone. It is a cloud-based phone system and is integrated onto the Zoom platform for a unified experience.

The sign-up process requires users to have an existing Zoom account, through which a Zoom Phone plan can be subscribed depending on the calling needs and the number of users. Setting up phone numbers and other phone system related features are also part of the configuration or sign-up process, and all these can be done within the Zoom app itself.

Viber – Viber Out

Finally, Viber is also an alternative that users can prefer over Skype phone numbers and calling. Viber is actually a messaging and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) app that lets its users make free calls and send messages to other Viber users, but with the help of Viber Out, users can call mobile numbers and landlines worldwide.

For this, after downloading the Viber app, register an account using a valid phone number. By adding credits to the Viber account, Viber Out services can be used for calling.
