South Korea will launch its 6G network services in 2028 and will become the first country in the world to bring 6G services.

Reports from the Yonhap news agency reveals that South Korea is planning to launch 6G network services, two years ahead of its plan, in 2028. This will allow the country to get a dominance over future wireless frequencies, said the ICT ministry on the 20th of February 2023, on Monday.

South Korea under the K-Network 2030 plan will aim in securing the best 6G technologies, bringing innovations in software based mobile network technologies and will also strengthen its network supply chain. This will enable South Korea to launch its 6G network services two years earlier than expected as per the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The South Korean government is also planning to encourage other local companies to produce more materials, parts and required equipments that will help in developing the 6G technologies within the country. The government also wants local companies to develop an open radio access network(RAN) which will be compatible with any mobile devices and which will also enable mobile carriers to offer flexible network services.

The total estimated cost for the development of the core 6G technologies within the country is expected to be 625.3 billion won(about 480.9 billion dollars).

It is also to noted that South Korea which is the fourth largest economy in Asia, last year, had 25.9 percent of 5G patents followed by China. China, which is the largest economy in Asia, had 26.8 percent of 5G patents last year. With the ongoing developments in 6G network services, the South Korean government expects the numbers to come upto 30 percent or maybe more in 6G patents and there by, in the future, will allow South Korea to acquire the leading position in global 6G network infrastructures.
