Comcast intends to bring multi-gig internet that speeds to 34 cities across the United States by year-end, with the goal of eventually reaching more than 50 million households by the end of 2025. The company has already begun deploying 2-gigabit broadband speeds across its network in Colorado Springs, CO, Augusta, GA, Panama City Beach, FL, and Philadelphia, PA.
Even with the new Gigabit x2 plan, upload speeds appear to be limited to 200Mbps, but Comcast aims to change that. It will introduce multi-gig symmetrical speeds next year, allowing for multi-gig download and upload speeds. While fiber optic internet is expected to have symmetrical uploads and downloads, cable has lagged behind. However, DOCSIS 4.0, will allow downloads up to 10Gbps and 6Gbps uploads, and providers such as Comcast can allow symmetrical cable connections.
Symmetrical speeds on cable networks could be a pleasant option for those who need a faster connection but do not live in a fiber-optic area. Customers in Colorado Springs, Augusta, Panama City Beach, and Philadelphia will not need to upgrade their modems to access Comcast’s faster 2-gig speeds for the time being.
